Run Away with Circus History
A History of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus
Thursday, July 16
6:30pm - 7:30pm
Join Katie Nickel, EdD of the Ringling Museum for an educational yet vibrant insight on the history of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and their impact on American culture and society.
The circus is one of America’s favorite and long-standing entertainment pastimes. At The Ringling, we often say that circus history is American history, as circus has been a continuous element in American culture, society, and thought since the nation’s founding. In this talk, Katie Nickel, EdD will provide a brief overview of an entertainment empire eponymous with circus still today – the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Nickel will weave stories from the circus’s early days started by five brothers with a dream together with the impact circus still has today. With a focus on John Ringling and Florida history, this talk illustrates how circus and American history are intertwined, how circus elephants changed society, and what exactly is the deal with all those clowns!
